This Monday we started our day with a conversation about Orange Shirt Day and the Terry Fox Run.  The children were very interested in the stories behind both these events and had lots of questions about them.

The morning class participated in their own mini Terry Fox run in the gym and the afternoon class joined the rest of the school for a chilly run in Green Park!  All the children participated and demonstrated perseverance and a good spirit during the run!

Most of the children worked individually with me to demonstrate their understanding of number concepts to 10.  They counted objects, named numerals and made sets of objects.

The children are very motivated to count and make sets of various objects and are often choosing to practice these skills during centre time.

Keep encouraging your child to count objects at home.  We are working on pointing and moving each object as we count and being sure to count with one to one correspondence (saying one number for each object).

Here are some ideas for practicing counting with one to one correspondence:
-count the number of forks when setting the table
-count stairs as you walk up or down
-count how many carrots are on your plate (or other foods)
-count while playing a board game like Snakes and Ladders
-count toys around the house
-count the monkey bars at the playground
-count the number of apples you need while at the grocery store

Happy counting!

I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends!
