April 27 - May 1

Welcome to a new week!

Last week you did a super duper job learning all about the number 9!



Look at some of the many ways you made the number 9!






You found so many beautiful items on your 9 nature hunts!





 You also found combinations of 9 items in your recycling containers!






 And you had fun playing card games!


This week is our LAST number week!  We made it all the way to 10!

Day 1
  • Ask your child to count to 10 and to show you 10 fingers.  
  • Make several groups of 10 objects from around the house.
  • Next watch this video that is all about ways we can represent the number 10.
  • Print out the Number 10 Sheet from the google folder or recreate one by copying it.

  • Use this rhyme to practice printing the number 10:
    • "10 is like a new train track.  Go down, pick up, then around and back!"
    • Try getting a baking sheet out and pouring salt or sand onto it in a thin layer.  Practice printing the number 10 with your finger in the salt or sand.  
  • Have your child use a pencil to complete the number 10 sheet, 
    • Print the 10's
    • Tally marks:  remind them 1,2,3,4 Number 5 shuts the door (a line across), then a space 6,7,8,9, number 10 shuts it again (a line across).
    • Number line:  start at zero and do 10 bumps.  Circle the 10.
    • Domino: come up with a way that 10 can be broken into two parts and draw the dots.
    • Ten Frame:  Colour in all 10 squares on the ten frame!
    • Draw 10 things that are the same (10 suns, 10 flowers, 10 cats etc.)

Day 2
  • Watch this video to learn about breaking number 10 into it's parts
  • Find 10 items that are the same in your house (blocks, beads, pennies)
  • The ability to easily visualize ways to create 10 (6 and 4, 8 and 2 etc.) is crucial to success with mental addition and subtraction later on.  The more you can practice the better!
  • Experiment with different ways the items can be grouped and then have your child write number sentences for as many ways that they can make 10.  Some children will need help to remember what the + and = sign are and how to use them and write them.
  • Some examples of number sentences are:
    • 5 + 5 = 10
    • 6 + 4 = 10
    • 7 + 3 = 10
    • 8 + 2 = 10
    • 10 + 0 = 10
  • Some more challenging number sentences they may come up with:
    • 2 + 3 + 5 = 10
    • 3 + 3 + 4 = 10
    • 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 10
  • The whole point here is to experiment with ways that 10 can be broken into its parts!  Some kiddos may want an extension to this activity and may even come up with subtraction sentences as well (11 - 1 = 10 or 15 - 5 = 10) etc.)...but this is not an expectation at all.

Day 3
  • Watch this video about a little dog named Ten!
  • Have your child solve this math problem.  Be sure to provide them with objects to use when solving the problem (red and yellow objects would be best for solving this problem...you'll need up to 10 of each).


You were catching ladybugs and bumblebees in a net and letting them go. 
Each time you caught 10 bugs and you did this 3 times!  
How many were ladybugs and how many were bumblebees?  
Draw a picture and write a number sentence to show your work how many of each you caught each time.  Remember you don't have to have a great deal of detail in your drawings, as long as we can see which are ladybugs and which are bumblebees.


Day 4
Math/Craft: Caterpillar with numbers 1-9 or 1-10 with ...
  • Make a Number 10 caterpillar:
    • Draw 11 circles on different colours of construction paper (or just on white paper if you don't have construction paper).
    • Have your child cut out each circle.
    • On one circle have your child print the number 1 and draw one dot.  On the next circle have your child print the number 2 and draw two dots.  Do this all the way up to 10.  
    • On the 11th circle your child can draw a face for the caterpillar.
    • Glue the circles in the right order from 1 to 10, starting with the face.
    • Decorate the paper if you wish with flowers, grass etc.
  • Play the card game Piggy Bank found in the math games file of our google drive.
