Good morning Kindergarten!
Wow...I can't believe it is already June. When we found out that schools would be closed till the end of June, that felt like forever away!
Now it is here so quickly!
Last week it was great to see most of you at our google meets!
It was fun to listen to your clues about your mystery 3D objects!

Last week we worked on solving problems about 3D objects. One of my favourite things about this at-home learning journey is seeing the variety of ways in which you all approach the work that is sent home! I love it!
Check out all the different ways in which we were able to show our work!

Super work everyone!
This week we will do some work with two and three part repeating patterns. Patterning is a concept that we spent a great deal of time on earlier this school year and it is foundational to a child's success with math in the future. At this time of year we re-visit patterns to double check a child's understanding and to apply their understanding to problem solving.
Please click HERE for the weekly schedule!
Day 1
- Watch this video about patterns.
- Print some pattern sheets HERE. Cut them into strips or copy them onto paper and have your child use objects in their house to make the SAME kind of pattern. The objects should not be the same as mine but the pattern needs to be the same (ie. under the circle, square, circle, square pattern your child could place dinosaur, bear, dinosaur bear).
Notice that all these patterns are ABBABBABB patterns:
- Next have your child make a NUMBER pattern of their choice. Find a recording sheet HERE. As long as it repeats then it's a pattern.
Here's an example (but your child can use 3 numbers if they wish or repeat a number...let them decide on their pattern).
Day 2
- Listen to this story about patterns and this song about patterns.
- Solve this problem (give your child coloured objects to help them visualize the pattern) and use pictures numbers and words to show your thinking.
You are planting flowers in your garden. The first flower is red. The second flower is red. The third flower is yellow. If this pattern continues, what colour will the 9th flower be?
Note: this problem could have more than one answer depending on whether or not your child picks an AAB or an AABB pattern. Let your child decide.

Day 3
- We've seen this song before and we love it!
- Solve this problem, using pictures, numbers and words to show your thinking.
You are making a patterned bracelet. The first bead is blue, the second bead is yellow and the third bead is green. If this pattern continues, what colour will the 11th bead be?
Day 4
- Watch this song about patterns
- Go on a pattern hunt outside! Consider letting your child use a camera, phone or tablet so they can take photos of patterns they see. OR take a paper and a clipboard and record the patterns you see by sketching with a pencil. Look for patterns on sidewalks, on houses, in flower beds, on trees, on fences, at playgrounds etc. You might be surprised by how many you can find!
I hope you had a fun pattern filled week!
Your child should be confident recognizing, extending, repeating and labeling two and three part patterns. If your child is struggling with patterning please continue this work by constantly making patterns with various objects (toys, food, in drawings etc.) and point out patterns everywhere you see them!

Next week we will be doing some problem solving using numbers.
Have a wonderful week!
