Today we learned a new math word....SUBITIZE!

Subitizing is the ability to look at a group of objects and to know how many they are without counting them.  We subitize when we look at a dice and our brain develops strategies to break groups of objects down to figure out how many there are.

We started our day by reading 10 Black Dots and discussing how we could tell how many dots were on each page.

We practiced our subitizing skills by looking quickly at some dot cards and saying how many dots we could see.  The children loved this challenge!

Next we learned a new game and played with a partner to practice subitizing.

When playing math games we are not only learning about numbers, we are also learning to communicate with others, be patient and take turns.

Next we learned all about the number 3.  We used our double sided counters to figure out how many ways we could make 3 (3 and 0, 2 and 1, 1 and 2) and we practiced printing the number 3.

Here are some other math activities we engaged in today during our independent work time and centre time...

Playing Lucky Number with a friend!
Making cool designs with pattern blocks.
Making sets of objects for numbers 1-10.
Using a number line to record rolls of a dice.
Making patterns with shells and numbers.

As always we had a fun filled Monday full of Math!

Have a wonderful week everyone!
