Happy Monday Everyone!

I apologize for not sending out a blog post last week! Life got a little busy!!

Last Monday we thought all about the number 4 and explored ways that we could break the number 4 into parts (ie. 2 and 2 or 3 and 1).

We also learned about the Power of Ten cards!

Power of Ten cards (also known as Ten Frames) are an amazing tool that allow children to develop a visual sense of numbers to 10.  Children learn to subitize (recognize at a glance) the red squares, which then allows them to visualize how many more they would need to get to 10 (white squares).  Over time children develop number sense and an understanding of the part/whole nature of numbers to 10 (ie. if I have 7, I need 3 more to make ten).

We practiced subitizing the power of ten cards.  The afternoon class had time to learn how to play a game with the cards (identifying who picked up the card with more red squares).  The morning class will play this game in the future also.

This Monday we did a whole group activity using Ten Frames.  Each child had a ten frame with ten pennies (one in each square).  We read a story about 10 trains.  Each time a train left the track we would remove one penny.  This activity taught the children how to use the ten frame and where to place the pennies to show each number.  They loved the story and using the ten frames!

Next we had a problem to solve...

"There are 5 friends at your birthday party.  There are vanilla cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes.  How many friends had vanilla and how many friends had chocolate?"

This open ended question allowed children to break number 5 into parts (4 and 1 or 2 and 3). It also gave children a chance to try to show their work using pictures, colours, numbers and words.  Organizing work on a page and showing how you solve a problem is important for future math problem solving tasks.  This was challenging for some of our little ones, but we all were successful in the end.

Next week I will be away in the afternoon and Ms.Lecocq, our music teacher, will be subbing for me.  I will be here in the morning.

Have a wonderful week!
