We had a warm and cozy Monday in Kindergarten today!

As always we started our Kindergarten day getting straight to work!

At carpet time today we practiced using 10 frames while counting along with a story about winter and snow...

For our table work we had a math problem to solve...

"You have made 10 Valentine's Card.  You have handed out 7 cards to your friends.  How many do you have left to hand out?"

We worked through a similar problem as a class and then went to work to solve this problem on our own.  This was challenging for each student but in different ways.  Some children knew the answer right away but had to figure out how to show their thinking using drawings, pictures and words.  Other children needed support to figure out how many Valentine's they would have left.  These children were able to use ten frames and heart beads to help them to visualize the problem a little more clearly.

We use pictures, numbers and words to show our work and demonstrate our thinking.

We are great mathematicians and super problem solvers!

After all that hard work we went to the gym to burn off some cabin fever!

At centre time I had the privilege of reading with each child that returned his/her home reading book today.
It is so exciting to see our little ones reading!
Remember to encourage your child to point to each word as he/she reads and also remember that looking at the pictures and memorizing text are great reading strategies for these beginning readers!
They need lots of praise and encouragement!

I hope you have a lovely Valentine's Day, a wonderful looong weekend coming up and a great Family Day next Monday.  I will see you in a couple of weeks!
