Happy Monday!

We started our Magical Math Monday by engaging in a variety of math activities as soon as we arrived at school!

During carpet time today we read the book The Button Box by Margarette Reid.  The book is about a boy who loves to sort buttons in many different ways.  After reading the book each child closed their eyes and picked and button out of our button basket.  Then each child had to describe his/her button to the class, listing 2 or 3 attributes (colour, size, texture, number of holes etc.).

Then children worked in pairs to sort a cup full of buttons in a variety of ways.

The magic of this Monday was in the rich and deep conversations that the children were having with one another regarding the buttons and how to sort them!  They LOVED this activity!

Buttons were sorted by colour, size, number of holes, shiny vs non shiny, type of material (wood, fabric, plastic), bumpy vs smooth....they thought of so many ways to sort them!

We also had a great time at centre time today!

The morning class had a fun gym class playing movement games and the afternoon class experienced their first fire drill.  They did an amazing job of walking out of the school quietly and calmly.  The morning class will have a chance to participate in a fire drill soon.

We ended our day with a story and with calendar time.  During calendar time we learn about the month, the days of the week, numbers and even patterns.  We can look ahead to important events that are coming up!

I look forward to meeting you all at Parent Teacher Conferences this week on Thursday and Friday!

See you then!
