Happy New Year everyone!

I missed your little ones very much over the last few weeks and I was so happy to see their smiling faces again today!

I hope you all had a wonderful winter break.  Thank you for the many cards, gifts, hugs and kind words you all sent me over the holidays.  I feel so grateful and fortunate to be a part of this wonderful little school community.

We had a lovely day together in Kindergarten today.
We started our day as busy bees exploring some math activities...

Next we learned about the Power of Ten cards!

Power of Ten cards (also known as Ten Frames) are an amazing tool that allow children to develop a visual sense of numbers to 10.  Children learn to subitize (recognize at a glance) the red squares, which then allows them to visualize how many more they would need to get to 10 (white squares).  Over time children develop number sense and an understanding of the part/whole nature of numbers to 10 (ie. if I have 7, I need 3 more to make ten).

We practiced subitizing the power of ten cards and played a partner game where we identified which partner had the card that had more red squares.

Next we discussed different ways that we can represent numbers.  Each week we will be working in our number books on a 'number of the week'.

This week we focused on numbers 1 and 2 so that we could learn the routine of working in our number books.  We represented number 1 and 2 by printing the numeral, tallying, using a number line, a ten frame and a dice.  We also drew objects to represent numbers.

We had a fun centre time too!

Have a great week everyone!  Stay warm and cozy and I'll see you next Monday!
